Motor unit number estimation versus compound muscle action potential in the evaluation of motor unit loss in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

چکیده

Abstract Introduction Motor neuron loss is the primary pathologic feature of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). An estimate number surviving motor units (MUs) represents a direct measure disease state in ALS. The objective study to compare MU estimation (MUNE) using multipoint stimulation method (MPS) and compound muscle action potentials (CMAP) amplitude patients with Methods Twenty-eight ALS duration 3–48 months were studied. Nerve conduction median, ulnar, tibial, common peroneal, sural nerves done. Besides, electromyography (EMG) cranio-bulbar, cervical, thoracic lumbosacral muscles, MPS-MUNE. Results MUNE decreased was positively correlated CMAP amplitude, medical research council (MRC) scale, functional rating scale (ALS-FRS). On contrary, negatively MUAP duration. Case detection by methods high as compared that amplitude. Conclusions highly specific more sensitive than detecting neurophysiologic abnormalities three times amplitudes. rate decline MPS-MUNE MRC score ALSFRS-R when expressed percentage change from baseline.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: a dying motor unit?

INTRODUCTION ALS is a late-onset neurodegenerative disease of unknown etiology. Since it was first described (Charcot, 1874), several mechanisms, such as oxidative stress, glutamate excitotoxicity, glial cell pathology, or aberrant RNA metabolism (for review, see Vucic and Kiernan, 2009). Recently the evidence accumulates that mitochondrial damage and defective axonal transport may play a pivot...

Electrophysiological Motor Unit Number Estimation (MUNE) Measuring Compound Muscle Action Potential (CMAP) in Mouse Hindlimb Muscles

Compound muscle action potential (CMAP) and motor unit number estimation (MUNE) are electrophysiological techniques that can be used to monitor the functional status of a motor unit pool in vivo. These measures can provide insight into the normal development and degeneration of the neuromuscular system. These measures have clear translational potential because they are routinely applied in diag...

Motor Unit Number Estimation in Evaluating Disease Progression in Patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

We investigated the availability of motor unit number estimation (MUNE) as a quantitative method to assess the severity and clinical progression of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The 143 ALS patients were evaluated by statistical MUNE and the revised amyotrophic lateral sclerosis functional rating scale (ALSFRS-R). By using mean values of MUNE according to disease duration, regression equ...

Motor Unit Number Estimation in Normal and Parkinsonism Model of Medial Gastrocnemius Muscle in Rats

Motor units (MUs) reflect the function of the central nervous motor system. Thus, the estimated MU number is a good option to investigate the functional movement disorder in the Parkinson’s disease (PD). The purpose of this study was to compare the estimated MUs number in the medial gastrocnemius (MG) muscle of the normal rats and those with the Parkinsonism. The MG muscle of two age-matche...

Motor unit number estimation, isometric strength, and electromyographic measures in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Pathologic progression in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) results from motor neuron death, while the clinical expression also reflects the compensatory effects of collateral reinnervation consequent to lower motor neuron loss. In a cross-sectional study of ALS subjects, we made comparisons between motor unit number estimation (MUNE) values and several measures reflecting collateral reinnerv...
